Advanced Professional Series (APS)

FEMA’s Advanced Professional Series, certificated by Washington Emergency Management Division, consists of five required courses and five elective courses. The ability to perform essential work in a disaster requires skills in emergency planning, operations, and management. The intent of this program is to provide familiarization training and skill development in a diverse array of planning, operations, and management skillsets. By mixing online and in-person training, this course series expands on independent study courses to apply knowledge and skills gathered through instruction utilizing practical exercises.

The APS is intended to expand on the Professional Development (PDS) series and prepare students for increasing roles within emergency management. APS may prepare students to attend the Emergency Management Professional Program’s (EMPP) National Emergency Management Basic Academy, the Advanced Academy, and the Executive Academy. The APS is not required to attend EMPP courses.
